For a complete history of the bandit and an artistic analysis of the whole series, see El Maragato Threatens Friar Pedro de Zaldivia with his Gun.
The fifth scene shows the crucial moment of the conflict. El Maragato's only option is to run away on foot, since his horse has just fled. Friar Pedro tries to ensure that he does not escape for a second time, and shoots him in the back of the leg, at which point the bandit falls to the floor. The scene takes place outside. In the background, we can see the horse as it flees, outlined against the sky. The bandit is depicted from behind as he looks back over his shoulder at Friar Pedro on hearing the gunshot. There is a correction on the left leg, which was previously stretched along a diagonal line. The alteration means that El Maragato's legs are closer together, making it seem like that he is paralyzed by fear rather than in the middle of running away.
