Historia

This painting, along with its companion piece, Queen Maria Luisa, was commissioned by the Royal Academy of History, through Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, to be displayed underneath a canopy in the academy. The two paintings cost six thousand reales, which the painter received in September 1789.

Análisis artístico

This is one of the best replicas that Goya made of the portraits of King Charles IV and Queen María Luisa de Parma to mark the coronation of December 1788.

In this example, the king is shown standing in half profile, life size. He is dressed in court attire, with a richly embroidered red velvet dress coat, ruff and lace cuffs. A dress sword hangs from his waist and the necklace of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the sash of San Genaro and the original sash of Charles III all compete for the viewers attention on his chest. On the left-hand side, in the background, we can see the royal symbols: the crown and the ermine robe. Completing the decoration is a striking, and rather ostentatious, greenish-coloured drape.
