Historia

Probably from the collection of Valentín Carderera, the work was sold by an unidentified Dutch dealer under the title Lucas (no doubt an allusion to the Romantic painter and imitator of Goya) through the art historian Eleanor Sayre to Philip and Frances L. Hofer, collectors in Cambridge, Massachusetts, around 1958. In 1979 it was bequeathed by Frances L. Hofer to the Fogg Art Museum of the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge.

Análisis artístico

See Characters wrapped in sacks.

This drawing has been little studied and has been ascribed to the series of preparatory drawings for the Disparates, on the basis of its technical and compositional similarity and the paper used. However, it does not correspond to any of the prints in the engraved series.

A sort of procession or group of people runs diagonally across the composition. The unfinished workmanship of the study, as well as the loose brushstrokes, make it very difficult to read and interpret the scene. Two figures stand out somewhat more clearly from the whole: a female figure in a skirt that seems to be moving out of the path, and another male figure. Several banners appear among the group, which seems to be carrying some kind of cross or crucifix.
