The drawing passed by inheritance in 1828 to Javier Goya, the painter's son, and in 1854 to Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, the artist's grandson. It was subsequently owned by Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861) and Mariano Carderera (ca. 1880). In 1886 it was acquired from Mariano Carderera by the General Direction of Public Instruction and was assigned to the Prado Museum, where it entered on 12 November 1886.
This preparatory drawing for the Caprices, which was never engraved, can be related to a drawing included in the Madrid Notebook entitled You have the nerve to undress, go on, stand still. These are two almost identical scenes that Goya may have considered too scandalous to be published.
The present work shows an intimate scene in which an elegant gentleman leans solicitously towards a young woman to help her undress while holding her hat in his left hand. She looks down so that she can untie her skirt.
Vigorous drawing on a uniform grey background, from which only an unmade bed stands out on the left.
