Assembly of the Royal Company of the Philippines (Asamblea de la Compañía Real de las Filipinas) (sketch)
This is a sketch for The Junta of the Philippines, a work which Goya was commissioned to paint to commemorate the general assembly of the Royal Company of the Philippines that was celebrated on 30 March 1815, in Madrid.
It belonged to the Laperlier collection. In 1879 it was sold for the sum of 805 francs. It was later in the collection of the Baron of Beurnonville. In 1884 it was sold again and acquired by R. Goldschmidt, who, in 1900, donated it to the Kaiser Friedrich Museum (now the Bode Museum). Today it is in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
Goya paid particular attention to the effects of light in the history painting for which this study was made. The sketch features stronger contrasts between light and shadow, whereas the finished version is more subtle in how it represents the light. Such a change allowed the painter to spend more time on depicting certain details such as the decoration on the flooring or the wall at the far end, which are not shown in such detail in this sketch.
