Dibuxado por D. Francisco Goya del quadro original de D. Diego Velazquez que esta en el Real Palacio de Madrid ("Drawn by Don Francisco Goya from the original painting by Don Diego Velázquez in the Royal Palace of Madrid", at the bottom, handwritten in pencil).
Watermark: J. KOOL IV and a drawing of a fleur-de-lis.
This work belonged to Juan A. Ceán Bermúdez. It entered the collection of the Prado Museum as part of the Fernández Durán bequest of 1930.
This drawing reproduces Velázquez's composition fairly faithfully. Particular care has been taken in the faces and flesh tones whilst less attention is paid to the study of the fabrics and their folds. The creases in the paper support appear to show that the drawing was used to transfer the design on to the copperplate.
