Supposed sketch for a tapestry cartoon that was never carried out.

Análisis artístico

This work forms a pair with another supposed cartoon sketch, Country Dance. At one time or another, both have been incorrectly considered to be studies for the pair of cartoons The Picnic and Dance on the Banks of the Manzanares, belonging to the series made to decorate the dining room of the Prince and Princess of Asturias in the palace of El Pardo. However, these works have little or nothing in common with the definitive compositions of these cartoons and the quality of the drawing is greatly inferior to what Goya was producing at the time. Arnaiz is of the opinion that the long shapes are far more reminiscent of the work of Francisco Bayeu and believes that the creator of this work may have been a follower of Goya's brother-in-law.

What's more, there has been some confusion over the correct identification of this sketch since Desparmet Fitz-Gerald indicated the existence of a replica of Majos Picnicking in the Lafitte collection in Madrid, when in fact it appears that he was actually referring to the same painting. In both cases, the dimensions were very approximate and furthermore, the whereabouts of the alleged Lafitte copy are now unknown, lending weight to the idea that there was only ever one work.
