In 1898 this work belonged to Francisco Cantín y Gamboa, Mayor of Zaragoza. In 1910 it was bought by Louisine W. Elder (the wife of Henry O. Havemeyer). In 1929 the work came to be in the possession of Adaline Havemeyer Frelinghuysen. Its current whereabouts are unknown.
This is a portrait of Goya's nephew on his mother's side, who died in 1879. The half-length portrait shows the child in front of a dark background, wearing a dress coat and waistcoat, with a white scarf tied around his neck. He is turning his head slightly to look out at the viewer, his large eyes revealing a certain shyness.
