Historia

This portrait was commissioned by the Duchess of Osuna for her palace of La Alameda.

Before entering the collection of the Hispanic Society of America, this painting belonged to a series of successive collections: the former collection of Don Joaquín Argamasilla, Madrid; the Desparmet-Fitz Gerald collection, Paris; the collection of the Prince of Wagram, Paris; the collection of M. Montaignac, Paris; and the collection of MM. Trotti, also in Paris.

Análisis artístico

Manuel Lapeña Rodríguez y Ruiz de Sotillo was Lieutenant General of the Royal Armies, Lieutenant Colonel of the Royal Guards Regiment of Spanish Infantry, Knight of the Order of Calatrava and was made a Knight and awarded the Great Cross of the Order of Charles III in 1812.

This painting used to hang in one of the rooms of the palace of La Alameda, the country home of the Osunas.

The subject is shown standing in front of a background of buildings. On his left are some rows of soldiers.
