Preparatory drawing for Caprice 68, Pretty teacher!
The composition shows a young and an old witch flying on a broom. The latter gives instructions on how to fly to the younger one, a fact that is reflected in Goya's handwritten notes in Caprice 68.
Matilla and Mena speak of the satirical sense of the image in relation to the artist's and his contemporaries' criticisms of the illusionism and procrastination symbolised by the world of night and witches. It must also be linked to sexuality and initiation into prostitution. In this piece, the old witch or procuress teaches the younger one, who hides her identity, to fly, a synonym for sex.
The drawing shows the traces left by the pressure of the press when intaglioing the 213 x 149 mm copper plate.
