This canvas was bought from José Miguel Pérez Ortiz by the Spanish National Education Ministry via the Comisión de Valoraciones y Exportaciones de Obras de Arte (Commission for the Valuation and Export of Works of Art) for the sum of 50,000 pesetas for the Prado Museum.
This canvas is very likely to be a preparatory sketch for one of the three known portraits of Archbishop Joaquín Company produced by Goya. This example was carried out on the occasion of the cleric's move from Zaragoza to Valencia.
It is a small work, in which the subject's face is lit by a light focus emanating from the upper left-hand corner of the canvas and illuminating his features. His dark clothing serves to emphasize the contrast with his pale face.
For more biographical information see Archbishop Joaquín Company.
