The Betrayal of Judas (La traición de Judas)
This is the sketch for the painting The Arrest of Christ located in the sacristy of Toledo Cathedral.
In 1867 this work formed part of the collection of Mr Luis Rotondo in Madrid, later passing to the Counts of Sobradiel. It was inherited by Mrs Rosa Cavero and was acquired by the Prado Museum in 1966.
This sketch seems to be a preliminary idea, and it is probable that a more finished, definitive sketch existed, given that this is such a simple composition. Despite this, the sketch records Goya's intention to emphasise lighting in this canvas, and the importance he gives to illuminating the figure of Christ, leaving the other figures in semi-darkness.
The execution is frenetic, based on bold, impulsive brushstrokes which give it a very dynamic aspect. There are no great differences in the composition, and the final painting even retains the empty space left above the heads of the men in this sketch. The main difference between this first idea and the definitive work lies in the colours, which are much more vivid here, in particular the yellow highlight on the figure on the right.
