Historia

Sketch for the tapestry cartoon Blind Man's Buff.

This sketch was acquired from the artist by the Duke and Duchess of Osuna in 1798. It remained in the cabinet that the Duchess had in La Alameda until it was sold at the time of the bankruptcy of the ducal household in 1896, when it was bought for 2,500 pesetas by Pedro Fernandez Durán, who then left it to the Prado Museum in 1930. It entered the museum's collection on 2 September 1931.

Análisis artístico

This sketch presents several differences when compared to the finished cartoon painting. Whilst the main group of figures at play remains largely unchanged, we can see that the cartoon has been simplified because in the sketch we also see a crowd of people in the background, over the other side of the river. The woman who is outside the circle in the sketch also disappears in the cartoon.

This painting is also related to the festivities of San Isidro Labrador. Goya reflected better in the sketch than in the cartoon the celebration that used to take place, after the religious ceremony, on the west bank of the Manzanares river, including the carriages and crowds of people sheltering beside the mountains around Madrid.
