The Count Duke of Olivares (in ink, lower centre)
Drawn by Goya (in ink, lower right-hand corner)
Painted by Velázquez (in ink, lower left -hand corner)
It belonged to the collections of Agustín Ceán Bermúdez and Paul Lefort (1867). It was acquired by José Lázaro after 1928.
This is a drawing prior to the print of Don Gaspar de Guzmán, Count of Olivares, Duke of Sanlúcar and is a copy of the portrait of the Count Duke painted by Velázquez in the Prado Museum. In this full-length equestrian portrait, Goya took particular care to represent Velázquez's pictorial qualities, especially the shiny coat and the reflections of the armour.
Changes can be seen in the back of the horse, in part of the saddle and in the horse's tail, as he changed the proportions with respect to Velázquez's original so that the figure of the count would be more centred in the composition.
