Historia

In around 1762 or 1763, Goya was commissioned to decorate the doors of the reliquary of the parish church of Fuendetodos (Zaragoza) and the wall in which they were set.

The piece was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39.

Análisis artístico

On the inside of the left-hand reliquary door in the parish church of Fuendetodos, Goya painted the figure of the Virgin of Mount Carmel holding the Christ Child.

It is possible that the artist's inspiration for the saints which decorate the interior of the doors came from conventional prints of the time, although the powerful sense of volume which characterises the main scene painted on the outside of the reliquary is also evident in this work. (For a full history of the reliquary see Coming of the Virgin of the Pillar to Zaragoza).
