Historia

On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).

Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.

Análisis artístico

This is a preparatory drawing for Caprice 15. Beautiful advice, which is based on a scene previously sketched in the Notebook A or Album of Sanlúcar, Women seated on the promenade. In the recto of the folio is Young Woman Crying Behind a Car.

This work served as a preparatory study before producing the etching with a composition very close to that of the engraving. The woman accompanying the maja formally coincides with the old woman in the print, which was not the case in the Cuaderno de Sanlúcar. The background has been modified, with a series of stains suggesting the busy activity of the stroll.
