On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).
Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.
Preparatory drawing forCaprice 64. Bon Voyage. This composition is the first in the series devoted to flying witches and wizards (from Caprices 64 to 68), and of all of them, this is the one whose appearance has changed the most in the final etching with respect to the drawing.
In the drawing, the characters seem to be depicted during the daytime; on the contrary, the print becomes one of the darkest in the series, a true night scene, punctuated only by some lights and shadows that make the monstrous flight even darker.
The title of this picture was used by Victor Hugo as an epigraph for a poem in Feuilles d'Automne dedicated to Sainte-Beuve and Louis Boulanger, whose illustrations for the poems Fantômes (1828) of the Orientales are directly inspired by several of these Caprices.
