The drawing was inherited in 1828 by Javier Goya, the painter's son, and in 1854 by Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, the artist's grandson. It was subsequently owned by Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861) and Mariano Carderera (ca. 1880). In 1886 it was acquired from Mariano Carderera by the Directorate General of Public Instruction and was assigned to the Prado Museum, where it entered on 12 November 1886.
Preparatory drawing for Big Booby.
There are certain differences with the engraving. For example, the giant's idiocy is more obvious, but he does not have the malignity of the engraving. His eyes are wide open and the hair on his head is tousled. He does not wear the castanets, although some authors suggest that they are very crudely drawn. The figure embracing the person wrapped in the shroud is wearing a broad garment reminiscent of a habit. The heads behind the figure are also different: here they are softly suggested and executed in a cursory manner, so that they do not have the prominence of those in the print, but rather seem to be a simple accompaniment to the giant.
The darkness that the aquatint brings to the print is not apparent in this drawing, which shows a much lighter scene.
