Historia

See Maja and Celestina.

This work belonged to the collection of Edward Habich, in Cassel. It was put on sale in Stuttgart between 27 and 28 April 1899 and was acquired by Gustav Radeke. It later entered the collection of the institute that houses it today.

Análisis artístico

For the artistic and technical analysis of the complete series, see Maja and Celestina.

Here we see two boys, one slightly older than the other, perhaps brothers, looking at a book. Going by their expressions, it appears that their reading material is something forbidden, which they are looking at in secret. Sayre points out the resemblance between these boys and those listening attentively to the reader's voice in the lithograph Woman Reading.
