On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).
Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.
The preparatory drawing for the engraving Love and Death from The Caprices shows few differences with respect to the engraving. The posture of both figures is the same, as is the way they are dressed and the expression on their faces. Goya has already clearly drawn the agonised gesture of the lover who has fought a duel and the anguished face of his beloved. In front of them, in both cases, lies the sword.
The only change in the engraving with respect to the preparatory drawing is the background, as Goya has darkened the upper part with a horizontal black stain that does not exist in the drawing, and the stone blocks on which the dying man is leaning. These are separated with a clarity in the sketch that is not evident in the print.
It should be noted that previously, in Notebook B, he had made a preparatory drawing of the same scene, Young Woman Holding Her Dying Lover (B. 35).
