Análisis artístico

See How the ancient Spaniards hunted bulls on horseback in the countryside.

Preparatory drawing of the print The spirited Moor Gazul is the first one to lance bulls in order.

It depicts a fight scene between the Moor Gazul, who is on horseback, and a bull that is charging him. Gazul is thrusting a spear through the bull with both hands, thrusting it through the lower part of the bull. The horse has one of its hind legs practically bent and is turned, looking at the bull. Goya uses a marked contrast of light, with very marked light and shadow, against a totally white background.

The engraving is a faithful reflection of this drawing, with the exception of the background, which was removed to leave only the essential elements on the white page.
