On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).

Preparatory Drawing for Caprice 44, Thin Yarn
The composition of this drawing is very similar to that of the print. One difference is that the babies in the drawing are barely sketched. Another is the insinuated paintings hanging on the walls, whereas in the engraving there were none, suggesting a room while the print shows an indeterminate environment.
Lastly, the crosspiece next to the broom does not appear in the drawing.
