On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).
Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.
This drawing was used as a preparation for Caprice no. 34, Sleep yields them. On the verso of the sheet we can see some brushstrokes in Indian ink representing a head.
The composition of the drawing is very similar to that of the print. Goya introduced practically no modifications; the four women and the opening in the background are presented in a similar manner in both cases, although the hooded figure on the left is barely sketched.
The Aragonese painter has combined sanguine with grey ink wash and pen-and-bugalla ink, suggesting a change during the working process. He sketched the figures quickly and superficially, taking particular interest in the effects of light that he would achieve when he transferred this image to the copper plate.
