Preparatory drawing for Caprice no. 30, Why hide them?
The composition of this drawing is very similar to that of the print. The old man holding two bags full of coins has no variation in the engraving with respect to the present drawing. However, the figure on the right is quite different, as in the drawing the painter does not depict him in a frock coat and top hat but in a simple cloak. The figure on the left, behind the old man, has the same characteristics both here and in the print, while the two figures behind him in the sketch are only suggested by extremely faint strokes.
