Historia

On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).

Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.

Análisis artístico

Preparatory drawing for Caprice no. 40, From what evil will he die?, which in turn is based on Dream 27: Witches Disguised as Commonplace Physicists?

With respect to the sketch for Dream 27, Goya has eliminated the donkey in the background, which is carrying some quevedos, as well as the female figure in the centre of the composition. He has also cast two shadows in the background, on the right side of the sketch, which will later also be used in the print.

Goya moves closer to the doctor and his patient, who in Dream no. 27 were more in the background, and in this way concentrates all the attention on these two figures who are the protagonists of the scene.
