Preparatory drawing for Caprice 78. Clear away, they wake up. Criticism of the clergy is one of the major themes of the Caprices series, because Goya depicts them, most of the time, as goblins and gnomes. In this way all the darts of satire directed against them are deflected as attacks on the marginalised.
Certain changes can be seen between the sketch and the print. According to Matilla, the details of the costumes and the features of the characters that identify them as religious have been intensifies in the print. The lighting effects have also changed, accentuating the contrasts and the nocturnal atmosphere in the engraving.
