The drawing passed by inheritance in 1828 to Javier Goya, the painter's son, and in 1854 to Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, the artist's grandson. It was subsequently owned by Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861) and Mariano Carderera (ca. 1880). In 1886 it was acquired from Mariano Carderera by the General Direction of Public Instruction and was assigned to the Prado Museum, where it entered on 12 November 1886.
Goya's Judith painted on one of the walls of his Quinta del Sordo (now in the Museo del Prado: Judith and Holofernes) differs greatly from the one in the present drawing. While in the mural painting the Aragonese artist depicted a young Judith with a sword or long knife in her right hand, in the present drawing a woman, standing and faceless, wields a large sword with energy. In front of her is a kind of tent filled with severed heads. Mayer identified this woman as the modern Judith and even thought he recognised Goya's head among the severed ones. Gassier also pointed to the personification of War blindly ravaging everything around her.
