See Don José de Toro.
This portrait was paid for along with two others, according to the Banco de España receipt dated 30 January 1787: "To the Painter Goya for the portraits of the King, the Count of Altamira and the Marquis of Tolosa ... 10,000 reales de vellón."
Don Miguel Fernández Durán was a Knight of the Order of Calatrava, under-steward to King Charles III and Director of the Banco de San Carlos.
This half-length portrait shows him dressed in a red waistcoat and black frock coat with gold embroidery painted with light brushstrokes, a shirt with frills and a white wig. He is wearing the insignia of the Order of Calatrava and a jewelled medal. In his left hand he holds a hat, and in his right, a walking cane. The subject's eyes look at the viewer with a touch of scepticism. His rosy cheeks give him a healthy aspect, standing out against the neutral background.
