On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The Coconut is Coming).
Line of provenance of the present drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.
In the preparatory drawing for the Caprice 6. Nobody is Known, there are some differences with respect to the engraving, such as the position of the head of the figure in the background, in the centre. It is not placed frontally, but is elevated, looking upwards, and the pointed nose is foreshortened.
The two figures in the foreground, slightly off-centre to the right, are not substantially different from the print.
The verso of this drawing contains the preparatory study for the frontispiece of the Dreams, which in turn could be considered a preliminary work for Caprice no. 43, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters.
