Historia

On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).

Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.

Análisis artístico

Preparatory drawing for Caprice 72. You will not escape.

The essence of the subject has been obtained by copying the drawing on the front of the sheet, but with a number of modifications that indicate that Goya did not simply intend to invert the subject, but to create a new piece. He redrew the woman's arms, which become much more "dancing", and added behind her the winged monsters that appear in the print. The result is an extraordinarily harmonious composition of curves and counter-curves (arms and wings).

Various commentaries of the period have given names to the figures. It has been claimed that it is the French dancer Mademoiselle Duté, pursued by birds of prey, one of them apparently being Godoy. Once again, these interpretations are alien to Goya, as he was on good terms with Godoy at the time he painted this work.
