This drawing contains the original idea for Charles V spearing a bull in the bullring in Valladolid. Gassier defended it as follows: "This drawing is undoubtedly a first sketch intended for print no. 10".

The costume of Charles V is striking, as it resembles that of A Spanish Knight Kills a Bull After Losing His Horse and that of The Cid Campeador Lancing Another Bull.  Matilla comments that, as in other drawings in this series, Goya makes no specific reference to the space in which the scene takes place, emphasising the group, without suggesting any background.
