Hunt with Owl and Net (Caza con mochuelo y red)
For the history of the whole series, see Wild Boar Hunt.
In addition to the different attributions made in relation to this series of cartoons and the documentation of Goya's authorship made by Sambricio, the work before us was also attributed to José del Castillo by Vicente López in the inventory that he carried out in 1834 for Ferdinand VII's will.
Around 1856 or 1857, this piece was moved from the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Bárbara to the Royal Palace in Madrid, and from there it became part of the collection of the Prado Museum in 1870 (still with the attribution to Ramón Bayeu). It was in temporary storage at the Treasury Building (Ministerio de Hacienda) until its return to the Prado in 1983.
The main element in the composition is the net that frames and unifies all of the other elements: the crouching dog and the cages holding the birds that serve as decoys. As in all of the cartoons of this first series, Goya sticks closely to the requirements of the weavers, with more clearly delimited outlines and stronger colour contrasts to make the work of transferring the design to the tapestry easier.
Because of their similar dimensions, and because both works are designed to be hung above a door or window, this cartoon is paired with Dogs on the Leash.
