Preparatory drawing for the Caprice 50. The Chinchillas. The first ide for this print was in the Dream, Dream 17. The Disease of Reason.
This preparatory drawing shows two inert characters, armoured and chained, being spoon-fed by a faceless being with donkey's ears. The print follows this design faithfully, adding a dark aquatint background to create a violent illumination that dramatises the scene.
E. Helman found the literary source for the subject, the comedy El domine Lucas by Cañizares, in which one of the main characters is called Chinchilla. The play is a satire on nobles imbued with genealogy.
