Preparatory drawing for the etching of Caprice 50. The Chinchillas. The scene depicts the aristocrats encased in their noble coats of arms, who neither move, nor see, nor hear. They only eat the food given to them by the women and men of the place. It is thus, according to Matilla, a fierce criticism of hereditary and unproductive aristocracy.
The print and the preparatory drawing are not identical, as Matilla describes: in the engraving the women and the male figure holding the spoon have disappeared. They are replaced by a blindfolded figure with donkey's ears.
