On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).
Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.
The sketch we are dealing with here was used as a preparation for Caprice 22, Poor girls! Moreover, there is a clear dependence on drawing 82: Poor girls, how many would deserve it better! What is this? What must it be, that they are being taken to San Fernando in Notebook B.
Although Goya works superficially and quickly, he shows in this image that he has a very precise idea of what the engraving should be like. With respect to the drawing in Notebook B, he has modified the clothes of the bailiffs, who are covered with a cloak, as we can see in the print. However, in this sketch they are both looking towards the front, whereas in the engraving the one in the background is looking at his companion. In addition, the Aragonese painter has replaced the sketched houses on the right of the paper in the drawing with part of an arch that can be seen in the engraving.
