The drawing passed by inheritance in 1828 to Javier Goya, the painter's son, and in 1854 to Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, the artist's grandson. It was subsequently owned by Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861) and Isidoro Brun (before 1879). It was later acquired by Pedro Fernández Durán of Madrid (1897?), who bequeathed it to the Museo del Prado by testamentary disposition on 6 July 1923. Following acceptance of the donation, the drawing entered the Prado Museum by Royal Order of 31 March 1931.
This is the recto of the drawing entitled Man with a Skull.
As Gassier pointed out, this drawing contains elements that would later reappear in other works by Goya. Such as the young man, similar to the fop of Caprice 7. No does he distinguish it, or the ghost, which is reproduced in Caprice3. The Coco is coming, although at a smaller size, and in the Fear folly.
The subject is difficult to interpret. In the foreground, an stylishly dressed young man crouches down and gazes at the giant ghost in front of him on the right. In the background, a crowd is watching the scene, with the figure of a man looking at the ghost through a spyglass.
