There are proofs, printed at the Lithographic Establishment of the Hydrographic Deposit in Madrid, in various collections: the Berlin Print Cabinet, from the collection of Federico Madrazo; the National Library of Paris, from the Provôt collection; and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
A young reclining women rests her head on the lap of seated old woman. She appears to be sleeping soundly, although she may also be passed out, as she is watched by two young girls, among whom the head of an old woman is visible. in the background, another female figure, barely hinted at, sits sedeways with her head and face covered by a cloak.
A simple triangular composition in which the focus is on the stain rather than the line. Goya applied the pencil on a coarse-grained stone. The absence of a background means that attention is focused on the expressions of the faces, making it impossible to decipher the exact meaning of the work.
