Unique proof, stamped at the Lithographic Establishment of the Hydrographic Deposit of Madrid, which is preserved in the National Library of Madrid, from the Carderera collection.
This lithographic essay was frustrated by using report paper to transfer the image of the preparatory drawing, now in the British Museum, London, to the stone.
A demon drags a naked condemned man towards the flames of hell by means of ropes tied to his ankles, while a group of demons seem to accompany them and push them forward.
Images of hell are a recurring theme in Goya's later works, and the drawing The Road to Hell is closely related to this lithograph, so it may have been an idea or preparatory drawing for another print, as yet unidentified.
