Historia

By inheritance it passed in 1828 to Javier Goya, the painter's son, and in 1854 to Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, the artist's grandson. It was subsequently owned successively by Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861) and Mariano Carderera (ca. 1880). In 1886 it was acquired from Mariano Carderera by the Directorate General of Public Instruction and was assigned to the Prado Museum, where it is now located.

Análisis artístico

See Woman / Snake

As in the drawing entitled Dandy / Monkey, a fop is the protagonist of the scene. In this case, the image reflected in the mirror is of a woman tortured by means of iron rings attached to her neck and waist and fastened to the wall with thick chains. The young man looks sideways at the mirror without giving much importance to the cruelty that is reflected back at him. Through the tortured woman, Goya may have wanted to symbolise the slavery of fashion, that is, the torture for the dapper young man of always having to be concerned with being fashionable.

Of the entire series known as Magic Mirror, only this drawing has an obvious chiaroscuro effect, although it broadly retains the masterly, modern abbreviated technique of the rest of the series.
