This preparatory sketch belonged to the collection of the Countess of Villagonzalo, and now forms part of the Maria Luisa Maldonado collection in Madrid. This sketch and that of the Adoration of the Trinity (Adoración de la Trinidad) are the only sketches for the paintings of the Chapel of San Antonio de la Florida that are classed as undisputed works by Goya.
The sketch depicts the miracle that is the focus of the scene painted on the cupola of the Chapel of San Antonio de la Florida.
Saint Anthony is shown raising the murdered man from the dead. Also visible are the balustrade, the man with his arms raised, the cloth on the balustrade and the little boy who stands on it, among other notable features. Although the main characters are shown in this sketch, they are all modified in the final painting, with the figures on the right being better defined and less crowded. The composition was thereby improved in the definitive work. The scenery in the background was also simplified, as Goya removed the flying angels shown the sketch.
This is a very light sketch executed on a reddish ground. The predominant colours are greenish blue and yellow ochre, along with some darker and earthy tones and a greyish green hue.
Cleaned in 1993.
