The drawing passed by inheritance in 1828 to Javier Goya, the painter's son, and in 1854 to Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, the artist's grandson. Subsequently, it was owned successively by the following artists: Valentín Carderera (Madrid, ca. 1861); Eduardo Carderera Ponzán (Madrid, 1880); Mª Pilar Carderera, widow of Eduardo Carderera (Madrid, 1822); and the heirs of Mª Pilar Carderera (Luis, Fernando and Alfonso Carderera y Carderera). In 1963 it was acquired by the Museo del Prado, where it is currently housed.
This is the most complex of the scenes drawn by goya, inspired by John Flaman´s drawings engraved to illustrate Dante´s Divine Comedy. . In it, occupying a large part of the page, eight standing figures, both male and female, dressed in long cloaks, are arranged in three small groups, while in the lower left corner a woman reclining on a bed embraces her newborn child. According to Pierre Gassier, all these figures were inspired by figures drawn by John Flaxman to illustrate the Paradise of Dante's Divine Comedy, specifically canticles 1, 3, 7, 15, 17 and 26. In fact, the two figures in the centre would represent Beatrice Portinari and Dante himself.
The drawing, like the rest of the series, is characterised by its masterly economy of expressive resources.
