This sketch came to light after its publication in the 1979 work Los Bayeu by Morales y Marín.
After Morales' publication, this sketch was also accepted as the work of Goya by several other authors: Gassier, Camón Aznar and Arnaiz. However, the catalogue for the exhibition curated by Manuela Mena and Juliet Wilson, Goya. El capricho y la invención. Cuadros de gabinete, bocetos y miniaturas (Prado Museum, 1993-1994), does not contain any mention of this work, speaking of Quarrel at the Cockerel Inn as the only reliable sketch for Goya's first series of cartoons.
The finished cartoon features hardly any differences from this sketch. But the sketch does differ in terms of its freshness, its colours and the application of the brushstrokes.
